Predictive Index Behavioral Assessment: What It Measures and How to Approach It Updated: September 2026 Key FactsThe PI Behavioral Assessment is the personality half of the Predictive Index — separate from the PI Cognitive Assessment, which measures reasoning ability. It's one of the fastest assessments you'll meet: a checklist of adjectives, usually finished in around 5 to 10 minutes, and it's untimed. You go through the list twice — once for how you feel you're expected to behave, once for who you naturally are.It measures four core drives — Dominance, Extraversion, Patience, and Formality — and places you into a "reference profile."There are no right or wrong answers, but consistency between your two passes matters. If you've already met the Predictive Index Cognitive Assessment — the fast, 12-minute reasoning test — this is its companion. That one measures how quickly you learn and solve problems; this one measures how you naturally behave and work. Employers frequently use both together, and you can read how they fit together in our PI Cognitive Assessment guide.Unlike most personality questionnaires, it isn't a list of statements you rate. It's a checklist of descriptive words, and it's strikingly quick — most people finish in under ten minutes. That speed is deliberate: it's designed to capture your instinctive self before you can overthink it.New to personality tests in general? Start with our complete guide to job personality tests for how these assessments work across every brand — then come back here for the PI specifics. How the format works — the two lists The assessment shows you a large set of adjectives and asks you to work through it twice:First pass — the expected self. You select the words that describe how you feel you're expected to behave at work, in your current or target role.Second pass — the natural self. You select the words that describe who you really are, naturally. The gap between those two lists is itself meaningful — a large gap can suggest you're adapting heavily to your environment. This two-pass design is why consistency matters: wildly different answers between the passes, or a "natural self" that looks engineered to fit the job, is exactly what the assessment is built to notice. What the PI measures — four drives Your selections resolve into four core behavioural drives:Dominance — how much you push to control outcomes and influence others, versus a more collaborative, accommodating style.Extraversion — how outgoing and socially driven you are, versus reserved and task-focused.Patience — how steady and consistent you are, versus fast-paced and comfortable with change.Formality — how much you work to rules, structure, and detail, versus flexibility and spontaneity.Together these place you into a reference profile — a named behavioural pattern the employer reads against the role. How this maps to the five core traits The PI's four drives map onto the five traits that sit under every personality test:Dominance → assertiveness within Extraversion, and the lower end of AgreeablenessExtraversion → ExtraversionPatience → Agreeableness and Emotional stabilityFormality → ConscientiousnessSo although the PI uses its own fast, distinctive format, it's reading the same underlying picture as any other personality test. (Openness is touched on less directly here than in longer questionnaires like the PAPI or SHL's OPQ.) Know exactly where you stand — Get your full personality profile → No right answers — but faking still fails The speed and simplicity of the PI make it tempting to just tick the words that "sound like a great employee." That backfires, for reasons specific to this format:The two passes cross-check each other. Present an idealised "natural self" that contradicts your "expected self," and the mismatch shows.Reference profiles are holistic. Ticking every strong-sounding adjective doesn't produce a "perfect" profile — it produces a scattered, incoherent one that doesn't map cleanly to any real behavioural pattern.Speed is the point. Because it's built to capture your instinct, overthinking which words to pick tends to create exactly the inconsistencies it's designed to catch.A genuine, coherent profile that fits the role beats a scattered, engineered one every time. How to approach the PI Behavioral Assessment Answer as your professional self. Picture yourself at work, and pick the words that honestly describe you there.Go fast and trust your instinct. It's untimed, but the format rewards your first, honest reaction. Overthinking hurts you here more than on any other test.Keep the two passes coherent. Your "expected" and "natural" selves can differ — most people's do — but they shouldn't look like two different people.Don't tick every positive word. A believable profile has a clear shape. Trying to be strong on everything produces a weaker, muddier result.Know the role. If the job genuinely leans on your real strengths, let those come through — that's honest positioning, not invention. You can't revise your way to a different PI profile, and you shouldn't try. What you can do is understand the fast, two-list format, answer instinctively as your professional self, and keep your profile coherent — which is exactly what separates candidates who pass from equally capable ones who get filtered out.Want the full method? It produces a behavioural profile that employers read for fit against a specific role — not a score you pass or fail. How long does the PI Behavioral Assessment take? It's untimed and very fast — most people finish in around 5 to 10 minutes. The short format is deliberate, designed to capture your instinctive answers. What's the difference between the PI Behavioral and PI Cognitive assessments? The Behavioral Assessment measures personality and work style through an adjective checklist. The Cognitive Assessment measures reasoning ability under time pressure. They're separate tests, and employers often use both. Can you prepare for the PI Behavioral Assessment? You can't revise to change your personality, but you can prepare by understanding the two-pass adjective format, knowing the four drives it measures, and practising answering instinctively and consistently as your professional self.Should you answer honestly on the PI Behavioral Assessment? Yes — honestly, and quickly. The two-pass design and holistic reference profiles are built to catch candidates trying to engineer an ideal profile, so honesty and coherence work in your favour.Disclaimer: Predictive Index, PI, and the PI Behavioral and Cognitive Assessments are trademarks of their respective owners.
